In January, I decided that my word for this year would be “identity” and that I would pursue learning and embracing my identity in Jesus. Life has been busy and it got pushed to the side, but there’s nothing to say I can’t start now.
I decided to start with this identity first – that I am a child of God. That we are children of God.
What does it mean to be a child of God?
As a child of my parents, I inherited characteristics and genes, and DNA from them. I am like them. I will always be like them and have that connection to them. I can’t change certain things that I got from them. Being a child of God, I also have inherited characteristics of God. There is a divine presence in me. Divine characteristics. I am made in the image of God – and just like I cannot change the DNA I received from my parents, there is nothing I can do to gain more or take away from the godliness that is now a part of me! I am a child of God and I am like my father!
So God created humans in his own image. He created them to be like himself. He created them male and female.
Genesis 1:27
God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us—an unbelievable inheritance! We go through exactly what Christ goes through. If we go through the hard times with him, then we’re certainly going to go through the good times with him!
Romans 8:16-17
12 But some people did accept him. They believed in him, and he gave them the right to become children of God. 13 They became God’s children, but not in the way babies are usually born. It was not because of any human desire or plan. They were born from God himself.
John 1:12-13
2. As a child of God, I am cared for and provided for.
I try to be a good mom, but I make mistakes. There are parents out there that do their best and there are parents who are terrible to their children. I provide for my daughter. I meet her needs and many of her wants. Sometimes I mess up. But God, in His infinite love and goodness, is and will always be the best parent there could be. As good as I try to be to my daughter, God is so much better at parenting than I ever could be. And God loves me as His child. He even tells us that as we try to do good things for our kids, He, as God, will do so much more for us! We are loved and adored and cared for as children of a loving Father God! He meets our needs. He provides for us. He often gives us our wants, too! He is a loving Father!
You can be sure that God will take care of everything you need, his generosity exceeding even yours in the glory that pours from Jesus. Our God and Father abounds in glory that just pours out into eternity. Yes.
Philippians 4:19-20
9 Would any of you give your hungry child a stone, if the child asked for some bread? 10 Would you give your child a snake if the child asked for a fish? 11 As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give good things to people who ask.
Matthew7:9-11
3. As His child, I am so, so loved by God.
I’m a mom. I love my daughter so much. I can’t put into words how much I love her and want the best for her. My heart overflows with love for her. I look at her precious face and my heart melts. She snuggles into me and I hold her and I love. I pour my love into her. There is no one else on Earth I love the way I love my daughter.
And God. God loves me as His daughter. My earthly love, the most love I can imagine and hold for my daughter, is nothing compared to the infinite love of God towards me, towards us, as His children. My love for my daughter, as great as it is, is a drop of water in the ocean that is God’s love towards us. I am His child and I am so, so loved. You are His child, my friend, and the love He has for you is incomprehensible. You are so, so loved with a love you cannot comprehend.
What marvelous love the Father has extended to us! Just look at it—we’re called children of God! That’s who we really are.
1 John 3:1
6-7 “What’s the price of two or three pet canaries? Some loose change, right? But God never overlooks a single one. And he pays even greater attention to you, down to the last detail—even numbering the hairs on your head! So don’t be intimidated by all this bully talk. You’re worth more than a million canaries.
Luke 12:6-7
You are the one who put me together inside my mother’s body, and I praise you because of the wonderful way you created me. Everything you do is marvelous! Of this I have no doubt.
Psalm 139:14 -15
What amazing love God has for us, his children! He intricately designed and created us before we were born. He knows the number of hairs on our head at any given moment. He cherishes us, provides for us, guides us, and lovingly dotes on us.
Because we are children of God, we need to remember that we are loved, cared for, protected, and living with His divine Spirit in us and with a divine inheritance on our lives.
God bless you! Happy Tuesday!
